About San Ysidro Ranch

San Ysidro Ranch is a historic luxury property in the Montecito foothills, just outside Santa Barbara. The land was first named by Franciscan monks in the late 1700s and farmed by Mission Padres until it passed to the state of California in 1864. By 1893 a small hotel had opened on the grounds, and by 1912 the ranch was hosting Winston Churchill and his family for the winter. During the Great Depression, Ronald Colman and former Senator Alvin Carl Weingand purchased the property and shaped it into the celebrity haven it became. Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were married here, and in 1953, John and Jackie Kennedy honeymooned in what is now called the Kennedy Cottage. The property covers 500 acres of beautifully maintained grounds, with a rose garden, koi pond, citrus groves, a lavender field, and open views toward the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

The Wine Cellar

The Wine Cellar is an indoor space with an adjoining stone fireplace patio. The firelight, stone walls, and intimate layout make it one of the most atmospheric spots on the property for a ceremony or dinner.

The Old Adobe

The Old Adobe is one of the oldest structures on the property, with exposed adobe walls and a fireplace that have been here for well over a century. Its smaller size makes it a natural fit for an intimate ceremony, romantic dinner, or a portrait location.

The Hydrangea Cottage

The Hydrangea Cottage is a smaller indoor space with exposed wooden beams and a cottage-style layout. It works well for intimate receptions and seated dinners where the focus is on warmth and closeness.

The Stonehouse

The Stonehouse Restaurant can be reserved for wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners. The interior has wood-beamed ceilings and a historic feel, and it opens to a heated terrace with views of the ocean.

The Plow and Angel

The Plow and Angel is a warm, low-lit indoor space with the feel of an underground speakeasy, paired with an outdoor terrace surrounded by citrus trees. It works well for intimate receptions, rehearsal dinners, and late-night afterparties.

Historic Character

The Old Adobe was built in 1825 and the Stonehouse in 1889, and both are still used for weddings today. We find that shooting in spaces with that kind of history results in images that have a depth that only a historical setting can have.

Private Setting

The property sits on 500 acres in the Montecito foothills, set back from the road and largely hidden from view. We find that the winding garden paths and spread-out bungalows create a natural separation between spaces that gives the whole day a quieter, more private feel than most venues we work at.

Portrait Locations

The rose garden, lavender field, citrus groves, koi pond, and ocean views from the Upper Estate Lawn give us a wide range of settings to work with across a single property. We have photographed here multiple times and still find new spots every time.

Insider Tips

The bungalows are one of our favorite places for couples to start the day. Spacious, beautifully furnished, and completely private, they make the getting ready portion of the day feel special and relaxed.

For portraits, the lavender field near the driveway entrance and the rose garden near the Lower Gardens are two of our favorite spots. The Old Adobe is also worth spending some time at. It is a historically significant part of the property that photographs really well.

The light in the Lower Gardens is softest in the morning and during the hour before golden hour in the afternoon. For ceremonies that start in the late afternoon, the mountain-facing orientation works in your favor because no one will be looking in the direction of the sun.
