About the Athenaeum at Caltech

On the Caltech campus in Pasadena, the Athenaeum is one of the area's most sought after wedding venues, a Mediterranean-style clubhouse that has hosted gatherings for nearly a century. Astronomer George Ellery Hale first proposed the idea in 1921, modeling it after the Athenaeum club in London, a gathering place founded in 1824 for people distinguished in science, literature, and the arts. Trustees Allan and Janet Balch funded the building with a gift of stock in 1929, cashed out just before the market crashed that same year. The building was completed in 1930, and the Associates held their first gathering there in January 1931, with Albert Einstein among the guests at the inaugural dinner. An endowment furnished the interiors with antiques and added the surrounding gardens and tennis courts, uncommon amenities for the time.

Couples are drawn to the Athenaeum for its privacy, its history, and the range of spaces. As a private club not generally open to the public, a wedding here gives guests access to a place most people never get to see inside. The property also has several distinct spaces, so a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception each have their own character. That mix, and the privacy alongside a hundred years of history, is not something a typical hotel venue can offer.

Getting Ready, Ceremony and Reception Spaces

The Mezzanine

Up a short flight of stairs off the main lobby, the Mezzanine is a bright, window-lined room that serves as a getting-ready space on wedding mornings. The windows bring in plenty of natural light, and the room has enough space for hair, makeup, and a full bridal party to get ready at once.

The Library 

The Library has the same wood paneled walls and barrel vaulted ceiling as the rest of the building, and often serves as a second getting-ready space. It comes in handy when a wedding needs more than one room at the same time during the morning.

West Patio 

The West Patio opens onto the Olive Walk, the tree lined path running through the center of the Caltech campus, with the building's columns and portico forming a backdrop. It's typically used for ceremonies, cocktail hour or a full reception, taking advantage of the largest footprint among the outdoor spaces.

East Patio 

The East Patio is a covered space with open sides, giving it the feel of being outdoors without full exposure to the elements. It's typically used for cocktail hour or a reception, depending on the wedding.

The Lawn

 The Lawn features a jacaranda tree that blooms in late spring, giving the space a different look depending on the time of year. It's used for a ceremony or cocktail hour, offering a more open, nature-focused feel than the patios.

Main Lounge 

The Main Lounge is wood paneled with a cast stone fireplace at one end, giving it a warmer, more residential feel than some of the Athenaeum's other rooms. It works for welcome cocktails, a cocktail hour, or a full reception, with the fireplace acting as a natural gathering point.

Main Dining Room

The Main Dining Room is the largest and most formal of the interior spaces, with soaring ceilings hand stenciled by artist Giovanni Battista Smeraldi. It's used for cocktail hour or as a space for a full seated reception.

Hall of Associates 

The Hall of Associates takes its name from the university seals lining its decorative ceiling, a nod to Caltech's academic ties around the world. It can be used for either a ceremony or a full reception, depending on how a couple has laid out their day.

What We Love About The Athenaeum at CalTech

Natural Light

Large windows throughout the building, paired with the open courtyards and patios, keep the property naturally lit through most of the day. No matter which room a couple has chosen, there's typically enough natural light to work with.

Architectural Detail

Columns, iron work, and wood paneling repeat throughout the building, though each area emphasizes them differently. That gives us strong framing and composition to work with in nearly every part of the property.

Unexpected Backdrops

Beyond the main event areas, the building has smaller in-between spaces, staircases, hallways, and covered walkways. These spots feel intimate and carry a moodier atmosphere, and they're often where we create some of our favorite portraits, tucked away from the main flow of the event.

Insider Tips

With the Mezzanine and the Library both available for getting ready, we count on having both rooms whenever there are two wedding parties preparing at once. Being in the same building makes it convenient for everyone, and the two rooms sit far enough apart to keep each side private.

We like to move between the natural and architectural sides of the property for portraits, from the olive tree lined pathways to the colonnade and arched hallways. Shooting in both settings during the same day gives us a wider range of images, some open and green, others more structured and formal.

We also love shooting portraits at the entrance around sunset, when the light turns warm and there are usually fewer people passing through. Between the formal staircase, the large arches, and the landscaping, it gives us several distinct visual opportunities.
